Common Questions About Electrical Upgrades

Why should I replace all my outlets and switches?

Outlets and switches wear out over time. If your home is 20+ years old and still has original electrical devices, there are several good reasons to upgrade:

Safety improvements:

  • Old outlets lose grip: Plugs fall out or make poor contact, creating arcing and hazards
  • Missing GFCI protection: Older homes lack GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, and garages—required by modern code
  • No tamper resistance: Modern outlets have shutters that prevent children from inserting objects
  • Worn contacts: Create heat and can create hazards
  • Cracked or damaged: Expose live wiring

Functional improvements:

  • USB charging ports: Eliminate bulky charging blocks
  • Better grip: New outlets hold plugs firmly
  • Weather resistance: Modern outdoor outlets better resist moisture
  • Smart home ready: Smart outlets and switches add automation capabilities

Aesthetic improvements:

  • Match your décor: Available in white, ivory, almond, gray, black, and more
  • Modern styling: Screwless wall plates look cleaner than old-style plates
  • Consistent throughout home: All outlets and switches match perfectly

Value improvement: Updated electrical is a strong selling point when listing your home.

Can you match outlets and switches to my new paint colors?

Absolutely. This is one of the most popular reasons for electrical upgrades during remodels. Outlets and switches are available in many colors:

Standard colors:

  • White (most common)
  • Ivory/Almond (common in older homes)
  • Light Almond
  • Gray
  • Black
  • Brown

Designer options:

  • Stainless steel
  • Brushed nickel
  • Oil-rubbed bronze
  • Custom colors (special order)

Wall plate styles:

  • Standard (visible screws)
  • Screwless (snap-on cover for clean look)
  • Decorative (various styles and materials)

We help you select colors and styles that complement your décor. Bring paint samples to your estimate appointment and we’ll recommend coordinating electrical colors.

What are USB charging outlets and should I install them?

USB charging outlets combine traditional AC outlets with built-in USB ports, eliminating the need for bulky charging blocks. They’re incredibly convenient and worth installing in key locations.

Best locations for USB outlets:

  • Bedrooms: Nightstands (charge phones, tablets, watches overnight)
  • Kitchen: Countertops (charge devices while cooking, keep recipe apps powered)
  • Home office: Desks (keep devices charged without blocking traditional outlets)
  • Living room: Behind sofas and side tables (convenient charging while relaxing)
  • Entryway: Keys/drop zone (charge devices as you come home)
  • Garage: Workbench (charge power tools, phones, tablets)

USB outlet features:

  • 2 traditional AC outlets + 2 USB ports (Type-A or USB-C) in standard outlet footprint
  • 3.1-4.8 amp charging (fast-charge capable for most phones and tablets)
  • Smart charging (detects device and delivers optimal charge rate)
  • Available in all standard colors to match your switches

What are GFCI outlets and where do I need them?

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets protect you from electrical shock by detecting current leaks and shutting off power in milliseconds. They’re the outlets with “test” and “reset” buttons.

Where GFCIs are required by current code:

  • All bathroom outlets
  • Kitchen countertop outlets
  • All outdoor outlets
  • Garage outlets
  • Laundry room outlets
  • Basement outlets
  • Crawl space outlets
  • Any outlet within 6 feet of a sink
  • Pool, spa, and hot tub areas

Homes built before the 1990s often lack GFCIs where required. This is a serious safety hazard—GFCIs prevent electrocution deaths from appliances near water.

During whole-home upgrades, we install GFCI protection at all required locations. One GFCI outlet can protect multiple downstream outlets, so you don’t need a GFCI at every location—just at the first outlet on each circuit that requires protection.

What is AFCI protection and do I need it?

AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers detect dangerous arcing conditions (like damaged wire insulation or loose connections) and shut off power before causing hazards.

Current code requires AFCI protection for:

  • All bedroom circuits
  • Living rooms, family rooms, dens
  • Hallways and closets
  • Most habitable spaces in the home

Older homes don’t have AFCI protection because it’s a relatively recent code requirement. While not required to retrofit existing homes, AFCI upgrades significantly improve safety—especially in homes with older wiring.

When we recommend AFCI upgrades:

  • During panel replacements or upgrades
  • After purchasing an older home
  • If you’ve had unexplained breaker trips (could be arcing)
  • During major remodels (code requires AFCI for any new or modified circuits)

My home has two-prong outlets. Can you upgrade them to three-prong?

Yes, but it’s not as simple as just replacing the outlets. Three-prong (grounded) outlets require an actual ground connection for safety.

Options for upgrading two-prong outlets:

  1. Run new ground wire: Fish ground wire from outlet box back to panel or to a known ground. This is the proper solution but labor-intensive if walls are closed.
  2. Install GFCI outlets: Code allows GFCI outlets without ground as long as they’re labeled “No Equipment Ground.” GFCIs still provide shock protection even without ground wire.
  3. Rewire the circuit: During major remodels when walls are open, replace old two-wire cable with modern three-wire grounded cable.

What we don’t do: We never install three-prong outlets without proper grounding or GFCI protection. Some handymen do this (“bootleg ground”), but it’s dangerous and against code—it gives false sense of safety without actual protection.

We assess your wiring during your free estimate and recommend the safest, most cost-effective upgrade path for your specific situation.

What if my home has aluminum wiring?

Homes built in the 1960s-1970s sometimes have aluminum wiring (cheaper than copper during that era). Aluminum wiring isn’t inherently dangerous, but it requires special handling because:

  • Aluminum expands/contracts more than copper with temperature changes
  • Connections can loosen over time, creating heat and hazards
  • Aluminum corrodes when connected to standard copper devices

Solutions for aluminum wiring:

  1. COPALUM crimp connections: Special copper-to-aluminum connectors at every device—expensive but permanent solution
  2. AL-rated devices: Replace all outlets and switches with aluminum-rated devices and use anti-oxidant paste
  3. Complete rewiring: Replace aluminum wire with copper—most permanent solution but expensive
  4. Copper pigtails: Short copper wires connected to aluminum using approved methods, then connect to standard devices

We assess aluminum wiring during inspections and recommend the appropriate remediation based on your budget and goals. Many insurance companies require aluminum wiring certification before issuing policies.

Should I upgrade to smart switches and outlets?

Smart electrical devices add convenience and automation capabilities. Consider upgrading if:

  • You want voice control (“Alexa, turn off the living room lights”)
  • You want to control lights while away from home
  • You want automated schedules (lights on at sunset, off at bedtime)
  • You want energy monitoring (track which devices use the most power)
  • You’re building a smart home ecosystem

Smart switch benefits:

  • Control any light from your phone
  • Create lighting scenes and schedules
  • Integrate with motion sensors, door sensors, smart locks
  • Reduce energy waste (never leave lights on accidentally)

Smart outlet benefits:

  • Turn devices on/off remotely
  • Monitor energy usage
  • Set schedules for lamps, fans, seasonal decorations
  • Control non-smart devices with smartphone

Important consideration: Most smart switches require a neutral wire at the switch box. Older homes wired before the 1980s often don’t have neutral wires at switches. We verify compatibility during your estimate and recommend solutions if neutral wires are missing.

How long does a whole-home electrical upgrade take?

Timeline depends on home size and scope:

  • Small home (20-30 outlets/switches): 1 full day
  • Medium home (30-50 outlets/switches): 1-2 days
  • Large home (50-80 outlets/switches): 2-3 days
  • Whole-home with panel upgrades and complex work: 3-5 days

We work room by room so you’re never without power throughout the entire home. Most upgrades are completed with minimal disruption—you can continue living in your home during the work.
